Use the product instructions as the starting point

Keep the cleaning guidance for tiles, grout, sealants, tapware, glass and joinery in a single folder.

Different finishes can require different products and methods, so choose cleaners that are suitable for the installed materials.

Record model numbers and retain a few appropriate spare parts or tiles where supplied, making later maintenance easier to organise.

Build a manageable routine

  • Clean surfaces using the manufacturers' recommended products.
  • Use the room's ventilation as instructed and keep accessible grilles clean.
  • Keep shower drains clear of accessible hair and debris without dismantling plumbing beyond the recommended routine.
  • Wipe up standing water on vulnerable joinery and surrounding surfaces.
  • Keep cleaning tools suitable for the finish so they don't scratch it.

Check for changes

Look for changes in grout, sealant, cabinet edges, adjacent paint and the ceiling below an upper-floor bathroom.

Notice whether a tap drips, a toilet continues running or ventilation sounds different from its usual operation.

Photograph a new concern and note when it appears so the appropriate trade has useful information for an assessment.

A visual check helps identify a change; it doesn't certify the condition of concealed waterproofing or plumbing.

Make future maintenance easier

Retain the handover documents and invoices, with details of who installed the plumbing, electrical work and waterproofing.

Check product warranties and maintenance requirements before replacing a component with a different model or finish.

When planning an update, choose fixtures with accessible service parts and enough room to clean around them.

The useful life of a bathroom depends on its construction, products, use and maintenance, so assess the actual room rather than relying on a fixed lifespan promise.

Arrange the right assessment

For a persistent leak or new moisture outside the wet area, ask an appropriate licensed trade to identify the source.

For an immediate electrical or structural concern, keep people away from the affected area and seek urgent professional help.

Share the relevant records and photographs, then agree the investigation and repair scope in writing.

Turn your notes into a project brief

Use the bathroom budget planner to explore a scope, then add your room details to the Sydney renovation enquiry form.
